Do you ever struggle to pray? To find the words, or to feel truly connected to God? There is a timeless, powerful tool that can bridge that gap: prayer journaling. It’s more than just writing down requests; it’s about having an honest, ongoing conversation with your Creator.
The best example we have is the book of Psalms. The psalmists poured out their deepest feelings—chaos, pain, fear, and even feelings of abandonment by God—directly onto the page. Yet, as they wrote, something shifted. By the end of many psalms, they arrived at a place of praise and trust in God's goodness, even when their circumstances hadn't changed (see Psalm 102).
This is the journey of prayer journaling. It creates a deeper intimacy with God because it demands and fosters radical honesty. And God, who seeks a real relationship with you, delights in that honesty.
What Is Prayer Journaling?
Prayer journaling is not another burdensome item to check off your spiritual to-do list. Think of it as writing a letter to your closest friend—the One who holds the power to change your life. It’s a place to process your emotions with God instead of immediately turning to someone else. While you don't need to journal every single day, try not to let too much time pass between entries. Consistency helps the truths you're discovering sink deep into your soul.
7 Steps to a Richer Journaling Experience
As an enthusiast for this practice, I suggest the following to enhance your journey. Remember, the more you journal, the more natural it will become.
Find Your Sacred Space. Physically go to a place where you can be alone and quiet. This is critical for focusing your heart and listening for God’s still, small voice.
Embrace Brutal Honesty. Be completely real about your feelings and emotions before the Lord. Don't be surprised if long-searched-for answers form on the page as you write, or if you sense the Holy Spirit’s presence more tangibly.
Date Your Entries. This simple act allows you to look back and see God’s faithfulness working through time, a powerful reminder of His constant care.
Incorporate Scripture. Write down verses from a recent sermon, a devotional, or your personal reading. God often uses His living Word to bring the very answer you’ve been searching for.
Listen and Write. Ask the Holy Spirit a question, then pause and listen. Write down what you sense Him saying, putting these impressions in quotations. This powerfully sharpens your ability to hear His direction and comfort.
Watch Your Perspective Shift. You will begin to see that you are less shaken by circumstances. A pattern will emerge in your writing, proving that God was with you all along, even when you couldn't feel Him.
Use Emotions as Prayer Flags. Don't stuff your feelings inside. Let fear, sadness, bitterness, or overwhelm become prompts for prayer. God will meet you in those raw places and speak to your heart.
The Ultimate Reward: Discovering Your True Self in God
Prayer journaling can put you in touch with the person God created you to be—the "you" that existed before life’s hurts and pains caused you to build walls, to stop trusting, and to become isolated.
Who is that person? God told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart” (Jeremiah 1:5). He says the same to you.
Through journaling, you can:
Reconnect with moments of childhood joy.
Identify past decisions that created distance between you and God.
Restore the intimacy with God that a busy life has stolen.
This process, brought deliberately to completion, has a beautiful paradox: it frees you from being consumed by your own wants, yet fulfills your true, God-given desires in ways you never imagined. It empowers you to pursue the original, glorious design He had in mind when He created you.
Look at the final psalms, 146 through 150. They are explosions of PRAISE! This is the final destination. After allowing God to cleanse us and make us new through honest conversation, we can praise Him with a fresh, authentic voice.
This is a process. Don’t hurry it. There is a person waiting for you in your life—the original person God made you to be. The person you lost along the way. The person God wants to use for His glory.
Prayer journaling can be the key that unlocks the door.
