Perhaps you are seeking God about your purpose. Do you have
a burden that won’t leave your heart? Your burden is often God’s way of
revealing your purpose. Why? Because a true burden moves you into action and
compels you to see a change in a situation. Nehemiah, stirred by his burden,
rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, and later proclaimed, “The joy of the Lord is
your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).
What moves your burden? Is it parentless children, injustice
in your community, corruption in your country, or poor leadership in your
church? That could be God calling you to effect change where your heart is
burdened.
Here are four lessons from Nehemiah about carrying a burden
and fulfilling your God-given purpose:
1. Your burden moves you to communicate your vision;
Nehemiah’s burden compelled him to speak to the king, who provided letters of
permission and resources. Similarly, your burden often has supporters waiting—people
who can help your vision come to pass—but you must first communicate it. As the
prophet Habakkuk reminds us: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he
may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; it hastens
toward the goal and will not fail” (Habakkuk 2:2-3).Don’t keep your vision bottled up; share it
prayerfully with those God places in your path. Your burden becomes a blueprint
for purpose when communicated.
2. Opposition cannot stop God’s plan;
Sanballat and Tobiah mocked Nehemiah, saying, “Even a fox can knock down these
walls!” (Nehemiah 4:3). Yet, their criticism did not deter him. When God places
a burden on your heart, no human opposition should discourage you. Pursue it
faithfully until it is fulfilled. Think of Esther, who risked her life to approach
the king for the salvation of her people. Opposition was real, but courage
fueled by God’s burden prevailed (Esther 4:14-16).
3. Defend your burden;
When threats intensified, Nehemiah instructed his team to work with one hand on
a shovel and the other on a weapon (Nehemiah 4:17-18). Some burdens are sacred
and must be defended prayerfully and strategically. Guard your calling. Protect it from distractions,
negativity, and compromise. God often entrusts burdens that require diligence
and wisdom to fulfill.
4. God ensures your burden will be fulfilled:
Nehemiah and his team completed the wall in 52 days (Nehemiah 6:15). When you
remain faithful, obedient, and reliant on God, the burden He has placed in your
heart will see completion. “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will
be established” (Proverbs 16:3).Don’t grow weary. What God has birthed in your
heart is coming to pass. Stay steadfast and trust His timing.
Your burden is not a burden at all, it’s God’s invitation to step into purpose.
Like Nehemiah, let it move you, guide you, and inspire action. Speak your
vision, stand firm against opposition, defend your calling, and trust God to
bring it to completion.
What burden is God placing on your heart today? How will you
respond?
