But for the believer in Jesus, this question has a glorious, unshakable answer. Your true identity is not found in what you do, but in who you are because of what Christ has done. It is not something you achieve; it is a truth you receive.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
This is the foundation. When you are in Christ, you are given a completely new identity. Let’s explore what that means.
You Are Not Your Past: You Are a New Creation
The world says, "You are the sum of your mistakes." Jesus says, "You are a new creation." The old labels—addict, failure, victim, sinner—have been nailed to the cross. Your past does not get the final word; the resurrection power of Jesus does.
Who God Says You Are: The Truth That Sets You Free
Let’s replace the lies with God’s truth. Here is a glimpse of your identity in Christ:
| The World's Lie | God's Truth & Scripture |
|---|---|
| I am a failure. | I am more than a conqueror through Him who loved me (Romans 8:37). |
| I am alone. | I am a child of God. (John 1:12) I am adopted into His family. |
| I am worthless. | I am God’s masterpiece, created anew in Christ to do good works (Ephesians 2:10). |
| I am guilty and ashamed. | I am forgiven and righteous. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). |
| I am weak. | I am strong in Christ. I can do all things through Him who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13). |
| I am rejected. | I am chosen, holy, and dearly loved. (Colossians 3:12) |
| I am a slave to sin. | I am free indeed. If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:36). |
| I am hopeless. | I am a citizen of heaven. (Philippians 3:20) My future is secure. |
How to Live Out Your True Identity
Knowing this truth is one thing; living it out is another. Here are four ways to walk in your new identity every day:
1. Renew Your Mind with Truth.
The battlefield is your mind. You must actively replace the old, broken record of lies with the soundtrack of God’s Word.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
Spend time in Scripture, not as a duty, but as a discovery of who you are. Speak these truths over yourself.
2. Talk to Your Heart, Don’t Just Listen.
When feelings of shame, fear, or inadequacy rise up, don’t just listen. Preach the truth to your own soul, just as the Psalmist did (Psalm 42:5). Say, "Why, my soul, are you downcast? I am a child of God. I am forgiven. I am held secure."
3. Live Out of Who You Are, Not for Who You Hope to Be.
You don’t have to become righteous to please God; you are righteous in Christ, so you can now live a righteous life. You don't have to earn your status as a beloved child; you already are one, so you can live in the freedom and security of that love. Your behavior flows from your identity, not the other way around.
4. Find Your Community in Christ.
We reinforce our identity in the family of God. Surround yourself with fellow believers who will remind you of who you are when you forget. We are called to "encourage one another and build each other up" (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
