| Jesus Preaching on Peter's boat |
Sometimes we think our faith and our job are two separate things. We go to church on Sunday, and we go to work on Monday. It can feel like they don't connect.
But what if your job is more than just a way to pay bills? What if God wants to use it in a powerful way? There's a story in the Bible about Jesus that shows us how.
The Story: A Boat for Jesus
One day, Jesus was by the Lake of Gennesaret teaching a huge crowd. So many people came to listen that they were all pushing in, and it was hard for everyone to see and hear.
Jesus saw two boats at the water's edge. The fishermen, Simon Peter and his friends, were cleaning their nets after a long night of catching nothing. Jesus stepped into Peter's boat.
He asked Peter to push the boat out a little from the land. Then, sitting in the boat, Jesus taught the people on the shore. (You can read this story in Luke 5:1-3).
That simple fishing boat, a tool for Peter's everyday work, became the stage for Jesus' message.
Your Job is Your Boat
Just like Peter, you have a "boat." Your boat is your job. It might be an office, a store, a school, a truck, or your home. It is the place you use your skills every day.
For Peter, the boat was where he had both failures and successes. Jesus stepped right into that ordinary space and used it for something amazing.
Other People in the Bible Whose Jobs Were Their Platform
The Bible is full of people who used their everyday jobs for God's work. Peter is not the only one.
Joseph: The Manager. Joseph was sold as a slave and taken to Egypt. There, he worked for a man named Potiphar. The Bible says that because Joseph was a good and hard worker, God blessed everything he did. He was put in charge of Potiphar's entire house! Later, when he was in prison, his good work ethic got him noticed again. Finally, God used his ability to understand dreams and manage things to make him a leader in Egypt, saving many people from a great famine (Genesis 39-41). God used Joseph's job skills to save a nation.
Daniel: The Government Worker. Daniel was taken from his home to work in a foreign king's palace. He was a smart and faithful man. He did his job with such excellence and honesty that kings trusted him. God used Daniel's high position in the government to speak truth to powerful leaders. Even when it was hard, Daniel's faithful work gave him a platform to share God's power (Daniel 6).
Lydia: The Businesswoman. Lydia was a seller of purple cloth, a very expensive fabric. This means she was a successful business owner. When Paul shared the good news about Jesus, Lydia believed. God used her business skills and her home to start the first church in Europe! Her job provided the money and the place for the church to meet (Acts 16:11-15, 40).
Paul: The Tentmaker. The Apostle Paul was a great preacher, but he was also a tentmaker. He often made tents to pay for his own expenses so he wouldn't be a burden to others. His job gave him the freedom to travel and share the gospel wherever he went (Acts 18:1-3).
How to Let Jesus Use Your Boat
So, what can you do?
Give Your Work to God: Each morning, you can pray, "God, this is your boat today. Use my work for your purpose."
Work Well and Be Kind: Do your job as best as you can. Be honest, be helpful, and be kind. This alone is a powerful way to show God's love.
Be Ready to Help: When a friend at work is having a hard time, be ready to listen or offer a word of hope. Your kindness will open the door.
See Your Job as Your Mission: You don't have to go far away to serve God. Your mission field is the very place you work.
