In Scripture, One of the clearest biblical pictures of an excellent spirit is found in the life of Bezalel, the master craftsman chosen by God to build the Tabernacle. Bezalel was the chief artisan tasked with building the Tabernacle in the wilderness (also called the Tent of Meeting).See, I have called by name Bezalel… and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.” ( Exodus 31:2–3)
The Tabernacle was a portable, tent-like sanctuary constructed by the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt, while they journeyed through the desert toward the Promised Land. It served as the dwelling place of God's presence (the Shekinah glory) among His people and the center of their worship and sacrifice during their 40 years of wandering.
Lessons from Bezalel
1. Excellence Begins with God’s Calling
Bezalel did not promote himself or push for recognition. God called him by name. An excellent spirit is rooted in understanding that our work, whether in ministry, business, or daily life is a divine assignment. When we see our responsibilities as God-given, we approach them with reverence and care.
2. Excellence Is Empowered by the Spirit
God did not only call Bezalel; He filled him with His Spirit. True excellence flows from spiritual empowerment, not human effort alone. Wisdom, understanding, and skill were imparted by God. This reminds us that excellence is cultivated through dependence on the Holy Spirit, prayer, and humility—not self-sufficiency.
3. Excellence Honors God in Detail
Bezalel worked with gold, silver, wood, and fabric—ordinary materials made extraordinary through careful craftsmanship. Nothing about the Tabernacle was careless or rushed. An excellent spirit pays attention to details, not for applause, but because God deserves our best. Small things matter when they are done for Him.
4. Excellence Serves others
Bezalel’s gift was not for personal fame but for the benefit of God’s people. His excellence created a dwelling place for God’s presence among Israel. Likewise, an excellent spirit seeks to bless others. It builds, serves, and elevates the community rather than drawing attention to self.
5. Excellence Is Cultivated, Not Accidental
Bezalel’s skill was nurtured through obedience, discipline, and faithfulness. Excellence does not appear overnight. It grows as we consistently surrender our gifts to God, refine them, and remain teachable. When God finds a willing heart, He develops an excellent spirit.
God is still looking for people like Bezalel—men and women who will allow the Holy Spirit to shape their character, work ethic, and service. Whether you are leading, creating, managing, or serving quietly, cultivate an excellent spirit. Do your work as unto the Lord, knowing that excellence is a testimony of His glory.
